After my lunch with Trinity, I sat at the bar and talked to Hudson for a few minutes. He scowled at everyone who walked by, and he looked like he needed a break.

“What’s going on with you?”

“What do you mean?”

“I mean, you look like you’re going to rip someone’s head off. What the hell?”

“I’m fine,” he snapped.

“Yeah, and you sound like it, too.”

“Finley knows Anna makes me crazy. Why would she send that woman over here to get their lunch?”

My brows shot up. “Seriously? This attitude is still because of Anna? What is your deal with her?”

“She just gets under my skin. I don’t deal well with her. And Finley knows that.”

“Don’t get mad at Fin. When’s the last time you had a day off?”

“I don’t get days off. I own the place.”

“Hudson, you need time off.”

“Rissa, I love you, but please don’t tell me how to run my life.”

I saw the exhaustion and the frustration in his gaze, but more than anything was the determination. He was going to do things his way, no matter what anyone else said. Period.

I nodded. “Got it. Sorry. Have a good day.”

He nodded sharply and went back to wiping down the counter.

Maybe Trinity was on to something about Hudson and Anna. But I was not getting in the middle of it. I had enough going on in my life.

I spent the rest of my day working on the app I was developing for Bex’s company. I was incredibly happy with the progress I was making and loved the freedom Bex gave me to run with the idea she chose. My creative block was definitely coming to an end.

I was finishing up my day when my phone buzzed with an alert. From Book Boyfriends Wanted.

Newbie: What are you doing right now?

I smiled. It was a very Xavier thing to ask. Not tonight, not next week. Right now.

Queen: I just finished work.

N: Does that mean you’re not busy?

Q: Yes, it means I’m not busy. Why?

N: Can I show you something?

Q: Sure.

N: Meet me out front of your building in five. Is that enough time?

Q: I’ll make it work.

Thankfully, I hadn’t changed after going out to lunch and was still wearing clothes suitable for being in public. I grabbed my purse, locked up my condo, and headed downstairs. Xavier was pulling up as I walked out the front door, and I jumped in.

“Hi,” he said, smiling as he waited for me to buckle my seatbelt.

“Hi. Where are we going?”

“Well, first, I’m hoping I can get a kiss from you. Then we’re going to the theater.”

“You’re going to show me the theater?” I gasped. I’d been wondering what he was doing to it, but I didn’t want to ask.

“Kiss later,” he said, chuckling as he put the car in drive.

“I’m sorry.” He was already pulling away from the curb. “I’m really excited. I haven’t heard anything about what you’re doing.”

“That’s good. We want it to be a surprise, so you can’t tell anyone what I show you. But I wanted to get your opinion.
